In lush grass where we used to play,
We’d sit and while the hours away;
With sun kissed hair and fingers stained green,
Plaiting daisy chains to fit a queen.
Barefoot royalty we’d wander, without a care,
As floral crowns adorned our hair.
Treasures we’d gather of buttercup gold,
Our bounty held beneath chins awaiting truths to unfold.
“Do you like butter?” we’d exclaim in delight,
And wait to see fortunes sunny light,
Reflecting in a buttery hue,
A yellow bruise foretells you do!
Tarrying as the clouds go by,
Amongst azure drops of the summer sky.
Our secrets we whispered to these blooms of blue,
Words hanging in the air like morning dew.
We’d cry to them ‘forget-me-not,’
‘Recall us when we’ve forgot!’
For time may turn and petals fade,
But it can’t steal the magic that we’ve made.
Because locked within the depths of you and me,
Resides not just childhood memory.
Here, where reminiscence dwells and nostalgia remains,
Summer’s eternal promise of halcyon days shall reign.
